A cat’s age matters for more than a birthday card. Kittens are fed, wormed and vaccinated by week; adults are weighed and checked by year; seniors are seen more often. If you know the birth date, the exact age is a few lines of date arithmetic. If you do not, you need an estimate and a way to be honest about what it is. This guide shows how to count a cat’s age in years, months, weeks and days, how to read it on the human-years scale and how the three stages of a cat’s life look in numbers. It sits next to our cat years to human years chart, which has the full table, and the Cat Age from Birth Date Calculator does the counting for you.
Counting years, months and days
There are three ways to express age, and each suits a different use.
| Format | How to get it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Years, months, days | Whole calendar months, then leftover days | Everyday use, vet forms |
| Weeks and days | Days ÷ 7 | Kittens and growth |
| Decimal years | Days ÷ 365.25 | Charts and calculators |
To count years, months and days, move forward from the birth date to the same day number in each later month, stopping at the last one that does not pass today. The leftover is the days.
Three cats, one date
Take 19 October 2026 as today.
| Cat | Born | Years, months, days | Total days | Decimal years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kitten | 1 Aug 2026 | 0 y 2 m 18 d | 79 | 0.22 |
| Adult | 12 Jun 2021 | 5 y 4 m 7 d | 1,955 | 5.35 |
| Senior | 3 Mar 2015 | 11 y 7 m 16 d | 4,248 | 11.63 |
The kitten is also 11 weeks and 2 days old (79 ÷ 7 = 11.29). For a kitten, weeks are the natural unit: a vet or a feeding chart talks about 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks, not “two months and 18 days”.
Check the adult by hand. From 12 June 2021 to 12 June 2026 is five years. From 12 June 2026 to 12 October 2026 is four months. From 12 October to 19 October is seven days. Total days: 1,826 for the five years (it includes one leap day, 29 February 2024) plus 122 for four months plus 7 = 1,955. The decimal age 1,955 ÷ 365.25 = 5.35.
Reading it on the human-years scale
The AAFP/AAHA scale gives 15 at 1 year, 24 at 2 years, and about 4 more for each year after (so 28 at 3, 32 at 4, 36 at 5, 40 at 6). The scale is for whole years, so part-years sit between two values.
| Cat | Decimal years | Whole-year anchors | Approximate human years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitten, 0.22 years | 0.22 | below 1 year (15) | Still growing; the scale starts at 1 year |
| Adult, 5.35 years | 5.35 | 36 at 5, 40 at 6 | About 37 |
| Senior, 11.63 years | 11.63 | 60 at 11, 64 at 12 | About 62 |
For the adult, a linear step gives 36 + 0.35 × 4 = 37.4. For the senior, 60 + 0.63 × 4 = 62.5. Neither is exact, because the scale is a guide, not a measurement. Say “about 37” and move on. For kittens, the scale does not apply before one year, since the early months are better described by weeks and weight.
Life stage by age
The AAFP/AAHA life stage guidelines divide a cat’s life roughly as follows. Check the guidelines for the exact boundaries your vet uses.
| Stage | Age (approximate) |
|---|---|
| Kitten | Birth to 1 year |
| Young adult | 1 to 6 years |
| Mature adult | 7 to 10 years |
| Senior | Over 10 years |
The adult in the table is a young adult at 5.35 years, and the senior is in the senior stage. For what changes at each stage, see cat life stages, when a cat is senior and senior cat care.
Why the exact age matters
Exact ages matter most at the beginning and the end. For a kitten, a week changes the food and care; the Kitten Food Calculator works from age and weight. For a senior, the date marks the point at which more frequent check-ups are advised. In the middle years, a rough age is enough. The exact count is useful when you fill in a form, book a vaccination (see how to calculate a due date) or celebrate a birthday.
When the birth date is an estimate
Many cats come from shelters or the street. If a vet estimates the age, the birth date is a notional one. For a cat estimated at 4 years old on 19 October 2026, a notional birth date is 19 October 2022. Every age you calculate from it is as uncertain as the original guess, and the error is a few months for a young cat and perhaps a year or more for an older one. Our guide on how to pick a birthday for a rescue pet shows how to choose and record it.
Month-end and leap-day cases
If the birth day does not exist in a month, such as 31 January into February, choose a rule (the last day of the month) and keep to it. A cat born on 29 February can use 28 February in years without a leap day. These cases change the months and days by at most a day or two. The total in days is unaffected, which is why charts use days.
| Born | Today | Years, months, days (last-day rule) |
|---|---|---|
| 31 Jan 2023 | 28 Feb 2026 | 3 y 0 m 28 d |
| 29 Feb 2020 | 28 Feb 2026 | 6 y 0 m 0 d, if 28 Feb is the birthday in common years |
State your rule if it matters, for example on a form.
A worked example
Nia adopted a cat on 19 October 2026. The shelter says it was born on 3 March 2015.
| Step | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Whole years | 3 Mar 2015 to 3 Mar 2026 | 11 |
| Whole months after that | 3 Mar to 3 Oct 2026 | 7 |
| Leftover days | 3 Oct to 19 Oct | 16 |
| Age | 11 y 7 m 16 d | |
| Total days | 4,248 | |
| Decimal years | 4,248 ÷ 365.25 | 11.63 |
| Human years (approx.) | 60 at 11, 64 at 12 | about 62 |
| Life stage | over 10 years | Senior |
Nia notes the age on the cat’s file, books a senior check with her vet and puts the next birthday, 3 March 2027, in her calendar. She will be 12 years old then, about 64 on the scale.
Looking ahead: the next milestones
Once you know the birth date, you can list the dates that matter. For the adult cat born on 12 June 2021:
| Milestone | Date | Days from 19 Oct 2026 | Human years (scale) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6th birthday | 12 June 2027 | 236 | 40 |
| 7th birthday | 12 June 2028 | 602 | 44 (mature adult) |
| 10th birthday | 12 June 2031 | 1,697 | 56 |
| 11th birthday | 12 June 2032 | 2,063 | 60 (senior stage after 10) |
The days to the next birthday are a quick count: 12 remaining in October, 30 in November, 31 in December, 31 in January, 28 in February, 31 in March, 30 in April, 31 in May and 12 in June add to 236. Put these dates in a calendar. The 7th birthday is a good time to ask your vet about moving from annual to more frequent check-ups, and the move into the senior stage is covered in when is a cat senior. The scale values are the approximate ones from the AAFP/AAHA table, not measurements, and your vet decides when your own cat needs different care.
Common mistakes
- Using 365 days for decimal years instead of 365.25.
- Counting months as 30 days.
- Applying the human-years scale to a kitten under a year.
- Treating an estimated birth date as exact.
- Forgetting to update the age on forms.
- Using different rules for month-end births.
- Reading the chart as a medical measurement.
Quick summary
- Count whole months from the birth date, then leftover days; use days ÷ 365.25 for decimal years.
- A cat born 12 June 2021 is 5 y 4 m 7 d on 19 October 2026 (1,955 days, 5.35 years), about 37 human years.
- Kittens are best described in weeks: 79 days is 11 weeks and 2 days.
- The AAFP/AAHA scale is 15 at one year, 24 at two, then about 4 a year.
- An estimated birth date gives an estimated age.
- Use the Cat Age from Birth Date Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out my cat's exact age?
Count whole months from the birth date to today, then the leftover days. Use days ÷ 365.25 for decimal years.
How old is a kitten in weeks?
Days since birth divided by 7. A kitten born on 1 August 2026 is 79 days, or 11 weeks and 2 days, old on 19 October 2026.
How do I convert to human years?
The AAFP/AAHA scale gives 15 at one year, 24 at two and about 4 more for each year after that. Part-years fall between two table values.
What if I do not know the birth date?
Use your vet's or the rescue's estimate and a notional birth date. The age is then an estimate.
At what age is a cat a senior?
The AAFP/AAHA life stage guidelines place cats over about 10 years in the senior stage.
Do indoor and outdoor cats age differently?
Age in years is the same. Lifestyle can affect health and lifespan, which is a vet question.
