Quick answer. A dog weighing 33 kg with an ideal weight of 30 kg is 3 kg, or 10%, over its ideal weight. Each body condition score point above 5 is about 10% extra weight, so that is roughly one point above ideal. Check the plan with your vet.

How to use the dog overweight percentage calculator

  1. Enter your dog's current weight.
  2. Enter its ideal weight.
  3. Press Calculate.

Worked example

A dog weighing 33 kg with an ideal weight of 30 kg.

Current weight
33 kg
Ideal weight (from your vet or the Body Condition Score tool)
30 kg
10% over ideal
Over by
3 kg (7 lb)
Roughly
1 body condition points above ideal
Current weight
33 kg (73 lb)

Rule of thumb: about 10% over ideal per body condition point above 5. Plan any weight loss with your vet.

Example values are illustrative; this result is produced by the same calculator above.

How we calculate it

% over ideal = (current − ideal) ÷ ideal × 100; about 10% over ideal per body condition score point above 5 (Laflamme 1997)

Understanding your result

The percentage over ideal weight is the current weight minus the ideal weight, divided by the ideal weight. A 33 kg dog with a 30 kg ideal weight is 3 kg, or 10%, over.

Vets use the 9-point body condition score, and each point above 5 corresponds to roughly 10% extra weight (Laflamme 1997), so 10% over is about one point above ideal. The calculator shows both the percentage and the rough number of points.

The ideal weight comes from your vet or from the Dog Body Condition Score Calculator. If your dog is below the ideal weight you entered, the calculator says so and suggests seeing a vet.

Common mistakes

  • Using a breed standard instead of your own dog's ideal weight.
  • Entering the weight a dog was years ago as its ideal.
  • Ignoring the dog's frame size and muscle.
  • Treating the rough body condition points as a diagnosis.
  • Starting a diet without a vet's plan.

Good to know

  • Feel the ribs and look for a waist; those matter as much as the scale.
  • Use the Dog Weight Loss Calculator and the Pet Weight Goal Date Calculator for a plan.
  • Weight loss should be gradual; ask your vet about the pace.

When to talk to your vet

  • Your dog is more than a little over its ideal weight
  • Your dog is below its ideal weight
  • Before starting any diet

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my dog's ideal weight?

Your vet can tell you, or estimate it from the 9-point body condition score with the Dog Body Condition Score Calculator.

What does 10% over mean?

Each body condition point above 5 is about 10% above ideal weight, so a dog 10% over is roughly one point above ideal.

What if my dog is below its ideal weight?

The calculator shows a negative percentage. If your dog is underweight, speak to your vet to rule out illness.

Is 10% over a problem?

It is roughly one body condition point above ideal. Ask your vet whether your dog needs a plan.

Can I use it for a cat?

The 10%-a-point rule of thumb comes from dog research, so it is built for dogs. Ask your vet about cats.

Does it replace a vet check?

No. It is a quick calculation to discuss with your vet.
