Quick answer. Dogs are pregnant for about 63 days from ovulation, and from mating puppies usually arrive 58–68 days later. A dog mated on 1 October 2026 is due around 3 December 2026. If there are no puppies by the latest normal date, or she strains for 30–60 minutes without one, call your vet.

How to use the dog pregnancy due date calculator

  1. Enter the date of mating, ovulation or LH surge.
  2. Choose which date it is.

How we calculate it

Due ≈ 63 days from ovulation (65 ± 1 from LH surge); from mating 58–68 days. The calculator shows the due date plus the earliest and latest normal dates.

Understanding your result

Dog pregnancy lasts about 63 days from ovulation. Counted from the mating date the range is wider, usually 58 to 68 days, because mating and ovulation do not always happen on the same day.

If a progesterone test gave the ovulation date, use it: the due date is 63 days later, give or take a day. If a vet identified the LH surge, birth is around 65 days after it.

The calculator shows an expected date plus an earliest and latest normal date, so you know when to ask for help.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the due date as a certainty. Normal births happen over several days.
  • Choosing the wrong date basis in the dropdown.
  • Waiting past the latest date without calling the vet.

Good to know

  • Ask your vet about confirming the pregnancy and preparing for whelping.
  • No puppies by the latest date, strong straining without a puppy, or an unwell dog needs urgent veterinary help.
  • Pregnant and nursing dogs have different feeding needs; use veterinary advice.

When to talk to your vet

  • No puppies by the latest normal date
  • Strong straining without a puppy
  • Your dog seems unwell during pregnancy

Frequently asked questions

How long are dogs pregnant?

About 63 days from ovulation. From mating, puppies usually arrive 58–68 days later because sperm can survive several days.

How can I tell if my dog is pregnant?

Your vet can confirm by ultrasound from about 25 days or by a blood test (relaxin).

When should I call the vet during whelping?

If there is no puppy after 30–60 minutes of strong straining, more than 2–4 hours between puppies, or green discharge without a puppy.

Which date should I enter?

Choose the mating date, ovulation date or LH surge date. From ovulation it is about 63 days, from the LH surge about 65 days (±1), and from mating the window is 58–68 days.

Why is there an earliest and a latest date?

Normal births happen over several days. The earliest and latest normal dates show when to expect puppies; if none arrive by the latest date, call your vet.

Can I rely on the due date for planning?

Use it as a guide, not a promise. Ask your vet to confirm the pregnancy and to plan the whelping, and keep their emergency number handy.
