Understanding your result
Wet food is often sold in cans or pouches, so it helps to know how many to feed. The calculator estimates your cat's daily energy (RER × a life-stage factor) and divides it by the kcal in one can.
A 4 kg neutered adult cat needs about 238 kcal a day. With an 85 kcal can that is about 2.8 cans a day, 20 a week and 85 a month. Enter the kcal per can from the label.
If the label only shows kcal per 100 g, multiply by the can weight in grams and divide by 100. If you feed other foods too, share the calories between them with the Cat Food Calculator.
Common mistakes
- Using kcal per 100 g as if it were kcal per can.
- Forgetting that other foods and treats also count.
- Feeding by the can size on the label without checking calories.
- Mixing different cans without working each one out.
- Not adjusting as your cat's weight changes.
Good to know
- Wet food adds water to the diet, but calories are what matter for portions.
- Open cans should be stored as the maker advises.
- Cats must not be put on crash diets; ask your vet about weight loss.
Frequently asked questions
How many cans of cat food should I feed a day?
Divide your cat's daily calories by the calories in one can. A 4 kg neutered cat needs about 238 kcal a day, which is about 2.8 cans of an 85 kcal can.
Where do I find the calories per can?
Look for kcal per can on the label, or kcal per 100 g and the can weight, then multiply: kcal per can = kcal per 100 g × grams ÷ 100.
Can I mix wet and dry food?
Yes. Use the Cat Food Calculator, which splits calories between wet and dry food.
What if my can size is different?
Use the kcal in that can. If you only know kcal per 100 g, multiply by the can's weight in grams and divide by 100.
What if I feed pouches?
Use kcal per pouch in the same way.
Do I need to adjust for dry food?
Yes. Share the calories between the foods with the Cat Food Calculator.
