How we calculate it

cost per week = price per kg × kg used per week; weeks per bag = bag kg ÷ kg per week; month = week × 52 ÷ 12; year = week × 52

Understanding your result

Litter is a steady monthly cost. Divide the bag price by its weight to get the price per kilogram, then multiply by the kilograms you use each week. A US$20 10 kg bag costs US$2 per kg, so 2 kg a week costs US$4 a week.

The calculator multiplies the weekly cost by 52 for the year and divides by 12 for the month, about US$17 a month and US$208 a year in that example. A bag lasts bag weight divided by weekly use, here 5 weeks.

If you are not sure how much you use, weigh a new bag, finish it and count the weeks. With several cats, enter the total amount for all of them.

Common mistakes

  • Guessing weekly use instead of measuring it.
  • Forgetting that litter weight changes between types.
  • Leaving out liners, scoops and trays.
  • Comparing bags by price per bag instead of price per kilogram.
  • Not counting the extra you use after a full change.

Good to know

  • Larger bags often have a lower price per kilogram.
  • Sudden changes in how much your cat uses the litter box can be a health sign; mention it to your vet.
  • Add the result to the Monthly Pet Budget Calculator.
