Understanding your result

Daily food amounts are easier to feed when they are split into meals. The calculator divides the daily grams by the number of meals, so 300 g a day in two meals is 150 g per meal.

If you enter the food's energy (kcal per kilogram) it also shows the calories in each meal: 150 g of a 3,600 kcal/kg food is about 540 kcal.

The calculator does not decide how many meals your pet should have. Puppies and kittens usually need more, smaller meals, and your vet can advise on timing for any pet.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the amount for one meal as the daily amount.
  • Forgetting to subtract treats from the daily total before splitting it.
  • Using cups for the daily amount instead of grams.
  • Dividing the amount for several pets as if it were for one.
  • Changing meal numbers suddenly instead of gradually.

Good to know

  • Weigh the first few meals on a scale to learn what a scoop holds.
  • The Puppy Food and Kitten Food calculators show a typical number of meals for growing pets.
  • Free-feeding makes the daily amount harder to control; ask your vet if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions

How many meals a day should my pet have?

That depends on age and species, so ask your vet. The Puppy Food and Kitten Food calculators show meals a day for growing pets. This tool simply divides the daily amount you enter.

Why divide the daily amount evenly?

Equal meals keep the total on target and are easy to measure. Your vet may suggest uneven meals for a particular health reason.

Can I use it for treats too?

Treats count toward the daily total, so subtract them from the daily amount before splitting it into meals.

How do I find the daily amount?

Use the Dog Food Calculator or Cat Food Calculator, which give grams a day from your pet's calorie need and your food's energy.

Can I change the number of meals?

Yes, but change gradually and ask your vet if your pet has a health condition or is growing.

Does this work for puppies and kittens?

Yes for the arithmetic. The Puppy Food and Kitten Food calculators also suggest how many meals a growing pet usually has.
