Quick answer A dog food with 360 kcal per cup and 3,600 kcal per kg weighs about 100 g a cup: divide kcal per cup by kcal per kg and multiply by 1,000. Fed at 2.5 cups a day that is 250 g. Always use a level cup, or better, a scale.

How to use the dog food cups to grams calculator

  1. Find kcal per cup and kcal per kg on the bag.
  2. Optional: enter how many cups you feed.
  3. Press Calculate.

Worked example

How we calculate it

grams per cup = kcal per cup ÷ (kcal per kg ÷ 1000); grams = cups × grams per cup

Understanding your result

Pet food labels often give the energy of a food in two ways: kilocalories per kilogram and kilocalories per cup. Dividing one by the other tells you what a cup of that particular food weighs.

The calculator does this: grams per cup = kcal per cup ÷ (kcal per kilogram ÷ 1,000). A food with 360 kcal per cup and 3,600 kcal per kilogram weighs 100 g a cup. Enter how many cups you feed and it converts them to grams.

The standard cup used on pet food labels is a level 8 US fluid ounce cup, about 237 mL. A coffee mug or a heaped scoop holds a different amount, which is one reason cups are less accurate than a kitchen scale.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a cup of any dog food weighs the same; kibble density and shape vary widely.
  • Heaping the cup instead of levelling it, which can add a large share to the portion.
  • Using a scoop that came with the bag without checking how much it holds.
  • Mixing up kcal per cup with kcal per 100 g or per kilogram.
  • Rounding the daily amount to the nearest scoop when the difference is a meaningful share of a small dog's day.

Good to know

  • Weighing the daily amount in grams once and writing it on the container is the easiest way to stay consistent.
  • If a food does not print kcal per cup, ask the maker or weigh a level cup once and work out the energy yourself.
  • The Dog Food Calculator gives your dog's daily calories; this tool turns the result into a scoop you can measure.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is a cup of dog food?

It depends on the food. Divide the kcal per cup by the kcal per kilogram and multiply by 1,000. A food with 360 kcal per cup and 3,600 kcal/kg weighs about 100 g a cup.

Why do cups of different foods weigh different amounts?

Kibble shape and density vary, so a cup of one food can hold much more or less food and energy than a cup of another.

Is weighing better than using cups?

Yes. A scale is more accurate because scoops vary and kibble settles, so weigh the daily amount in grams when you can.

Which cup does the label mean?

Pet food labels use a level 8 US fluid ounce cup, about 237 mL. A mug or heaped scoop holds a different amount.

What if my bag only shows kcal per cup?

Weigh one level cup of the food on a kitchen scale. That gives grams per cup directly, and you can then convert the daily amount.

How many cups are in a kilogram?

Divide 1,000 by the grams per cup. At 100 g a cup, a kilogram is 10 cups; the calculator shows the number for your food.
