Quick answer A rectangular pond 3 m long, 2 m wide and 0.8 m deep holds about 4,800 litres, roughly 1,268 US gallons. Round ponds use π × radius² × depth and oval ponds π ÷ 4 × length × width × depth. Use the average depth, not the deepest point.

How to use the pond volume calculator

  1. Choose the pond shape.
  2. Measure the length, width and average depth.
  3. Press Calculate.

Worked example

A rectangular pond 3 m long, 2 m wide and 0.8 m deep on average.

Pond shape
Rectangular pond
Length (diameter for a round pond)
3 m
Width (rectangular and oval ponds)
2 m
Average depth
0.8 m
4,800 L (1,268 US gal)
Litres
4,800 L
US gallons
1,268 gal
UK gallons
1,056 gal
Cubic metres
4.8

Use the average depth, not the deepest point. Irregular ponds are best split into sections.

Example values are illustrative; this result is produced by the same calculator above.

How we calculate it

rectangular: L × W × D; round: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × D; oval: π ÷ 4 × L × W × D (metres), × 1,000 = litres

Understanding your result

Pond volume is needed to dose treatments, choose a pump or filter, and plan water changes. For a rectangular pond it is length × width × depth. A pond 3 m long, 2 m wide and 0.8 m deep holds 4.8 cubic metres, which is 4,800 litres.

Round ponds use π × radius² × depth. Oval ponds use the area of an ellipse, π ÷ 4 × length × width, times the depth. Cubic metres are multiplied by 1,000 to get litres, and litres are divided by 3.7854 for US gallons.

Real ponds slope and have shelves, so use the average depth. For irregular shapes, measure sections separately and add the results, or fill the pond through a metered hose.

Common mistakes

  • Using the deepest point instead of the average depth.
  • Measuring the outside of the liner rather than the water surface.
  • Treating an irregular pond as a perfect rectangle.
  • Mixing metres and feet.
  • Forgetting that the water level changes with rain and evaporation.

Good to know

  • An error of 10 cm in depth can change a small pond's volume by a large share, so measure carefully.
  • Use the Aquarium Water Change Calculator for percentage changes once you know the volume.
  • Check local advice for any treatments; this tool only gives the volume.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure the average depth of a pond?

Measure the depth at several points and average them. Ponds that slope or have shelves are shallower on average than their deepest point.

How accurate is this for natural ponds?

It is an estimate. Irregular shapes are better split into sections, or measured by filling from a metered hose.

How many US gallons is a litre?

Divide litres by 3.7854 to get US gallons. The calculator shows both.

How do I measure an irregular pond?

Split it into sections that are close to rectangles, circles or ovals, calculate each and add the results.

Why use the average depth?

Ponds slope and have shelves, so the deepest point overstates the volume. Measure the depth at several places and average them.

How many litres in a cubic metre?

One cubic metre is 1,000 litres.
