Understanding your result
Routine vet care is the predictable part of vet costs: check-ups, vaccines, preventive treatments such as flea and worm control, and dental care. The calculator multiplies check-ups by their price, adds yearly vaccines and dental costs, adds twelve months of preventives, and adds any other routine items.
Two check-ups at US$60, US$80 of vaccines, US$15 a month of preventives, US$200 of dental care and US$50 of other items come to US$630 a year, or US$52.50 a month.
Emergencies and illness are not routine, so they are not included. Use the Pet Emergency Fund Calculator or the Pet Insurance Break-Even Calculator to plan for them.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting that preventives are paid monthly.
- Leaving out dental care when it is likely.
- Counting a vaccine course for a puppy or kitten as one visit.
- Entering a one-off cost as a yearly cost.
- Assuming routine costs stay the same as a pet ages.
Good to know
- Ask your vet which routine care your pet needs and how often.
- Older pets often need more check-ups; budget a little extra.
- Add the monthly figure to the Monthly Pet Budget Calculator.
Building a routine vet budget
List the routine care your vet recommends in a year, then price each item. Ask the practice for its current prices for check-ups, vaccinations, parasite control and dental care, and ask whether they offer a yearly care plan that spreads the cost.
A simple example: two check-ups at 60 each is 120, vaccines 80, monthly preventive treatment at 20 is 240 a year, dental care 150 and other routine items 100. The yearly total is 690, or 57.50 a month. That figure is for routine care only; unexpected illness and accidents come on top, which is what insurance and an emergency fund are for.
Enter the monthly figure in the Monthly Pet Budget Calculator, and compare it with a policy using the Pet Insurance Break-Even Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as routine vet care?
Check-ups, vaccines, preventive treatments and dental care are routine. Emergencies and illness are not, so plan for them separately.
How often does my pet need a check-up?
Ask your vet; it depends on age and health. Enter the number you plan.
Does this include insurance?
No. Use the Pet Insurance Break-Even Calculator for that.
Are emergencies included?
No. This is routine care. Plan for emergencies with an emergency fund or insurance.
How do I handle a puppy or kitten?
Young pets have several vaccine visits and extra care. Add those costs to the vaccine and other boxes.
Can I enter several pets?
Yes. Enter combined totals, or run the calculation once per pet.
